Salkantay to Machupicchu 5 Days 4 Nights

The Apu Salkantay (6264 masl) is a sacred mountain in the Vilcabamba mountain range, located south of the Sacred Citadel of Machu Picchu. This mountain, together with the Southern Cross, served as a reference point for the astrological observation developed by the Incas (from Machu Picchu), especially during the solstices of June and December. Its location favours the concept of "sacred geography", according to which the Incas developed the Andean civilisation. Read more about this tour below.

Camps & Hostel

The best time of the year to visit the Apu Salkantay is during the winter, between April and October. Temperatures range from -5 º C to 23 º C with a low probability of rain. The maximum height we will reach is 4643 meters above sea level at the Salkantay Pass, with the minimum altitude being 2000 meters above sea level in the town of Aguas Calientes.

The ecological floors that we will experience will vary from Quechua (2500m. To 3500m.), Suni (3500m. To 4000 m.), Puna (4100m. To 4800m.) And Janca (4800m. To 6768m) with all its characteristic flora and fauna.

Day 1

Transport to Mollepata

We leave at 4:30 am from the City of Cusco and we will pass through the towns of Izcuchaca and Limatambo, arriving at Mollepata at approximately 8.00am.

Silcakancha Field Lunch

At 12 noon, we will have a stop to serve lunch in the field of the Silcakancha sector.

Soraypampa Camp Site

Arrive at Soraypampa where we will spend the night in our camp.

Day 2


Breakfast at around 7:00 am.

We begin to climb to what will be the highest point of our entire tour, “the Salkantay Pass”, at 4,600 meters above sea level. From this point we can appreciate the most spectacular views of the Salkantay mountain, an imposing snowy peak (6,264 meters). We will have 03 hours of walking, with other spectacular views of the Umantay mountains (3,473m.) And Huayanay, small lakes and moraines (Accumulation of stones and mud transported by a glacier and deposited in its basin).

Lunch, Huayraqmachay (3,700 meters).

Camp Chaullay

We will arrive at our camp in Chaullay (2,920m.).

Day 3


Early breakfast before the start of the tour.

We will have 06 hours of easy descent. We will be introduced in a high jungle location, called Ceja de Selva, where coffee, coca, fruit plantations, variety of birds, mammals, insects and other animals can be observed. There will be time to bathe in a waterfall, take pictures. If we are lucky, we can observe the famous bird, "Gallito de las Rocas". From Playa Sahuayaco, we will go to the camp located in the hot springs of Santa Teresa

Day 4


The departure is scheduled for 7:30 in the morning

We have a walk approximately 2 hours and then go to the old town of Santa Teresa that was destroyed by a flood in 1997, thus reaching Oroya at approximately 10 am ., here we will experience very strong emotions when crossing the mentioned oroya, beyond we will appreciate an underground river and in the same place we will already see the Machupicchu Hydroelectric where it produces the electricity for consumption of the City of Cusco. Arriving in this way to the Village of the Hydroelectric lunch place, where we will say goodbye to the support staff, here you can decide between continuing the trekking to Aguas Calientes that would logically be the most ideal or take a train.

In this place you will spend the night in a hostel located in the same town. (Extra train cost USD 10.00 APROX)

Day 5

Hike: Inca citadel of Machupicchu

Around 4:00 am we will get ready to go to the Inca citadel of Machupicchu a way up through the jungle, having the opportunity to see the sunrise, after registering at the control of the park 6:20 am we will appreciate the Sunrise if luck accompanies us, then we will continue the visit within Machupicchu accompanied by our professional guide who will share his knowledge with us for approximately two hours and then we will have free time to tour and take the photographic souvenir shots within the citadel.
Optional: Hike Huaynapicchu

If the body allows us we can climb to Huaynapicchu (young mountain) the cusp of the trip from where we can enjoy and see in the distance the Inca citadel at its best. This tour could take an hour and a half but it is worth the effort since the landscape is indescribable. It should be mentioned that the climb of the "stairs" is moderately dangerous and not recommended for people suffering from vertigo.
Train to Ollantaytambo

In the afternoon we will descend to the town for the return on the Tourist Train from Machupicchu Pueblo to Ollantaytambo, where we will be picked up by tourist bus and transferred to Cusco, where the tour ends.

You must send us a copy/picture of both side of your student card. Students card must be an original ID given from the university in PVC material and it must have the next requirements: university information, personal student information, student picture, and expiration date valid only for one year, the year must coincide with the date you’ll be visiting Machu Picchu, the discount is until 25 years old. If you are older than 25 even you hold a valid student card, according to the Peruvian government rule you don’t apply to it any more.
